History
History
"The temple's parking lot is now located at the entrance to a military camp that operated in the past. The people who worked in the nearby camp, mostly Indian laborers and engineers began to build the temple. A Muslim Malay man who was unable to pray due to the facilities of the surau in the camp which is not good, decided to build a small shrine near the entrance. A group of people from a temple decided to take some statues of gods to be washed into the sea. As they began to place each statue of the god into the sea, the sea level began to change. For some deities, the water level decreases while for some deities, like Ayyanar, Muniswarar and Bairavar, the water level rises. Due to the rising water level, they decided to leave a statue of a certain deity on the beach. Since they could not bring the earthen statue of Anjeneayar, they decided to leave it there as well. While they were leaving, the Malay Muslim man who was praying in the small surau he had built saw the statue of Anjeneayar and later returned to the camp to tell his Indian colleague about the statue. The Indians from the army camp decided to build a small temple on the exact spot where the statue of the deity was found using cement. Later, the statues of Ayyanar, Muniswarar and Bairavar were also placed in the temple. Over time, people around began to worship the surau as 'Dato'."
Significance
"A photography-loving tourist couple staying at one of the nearby hotels, took a photo with Anjeneayar's statue because they found it interesting to have a statue in the forest. The next day, he took another photo with Anjeneayar's statue as well. To his surprise, he felt that the statue had turned around. Out of curiosity, he printed the pictures and found that indeed the statue of the deity had changed a little on the second day he took the pictures. It was a surau (Prayer for Muslims) which later became the 'Dato' temple and finally Anjeneayar temple. In 2004, on a Sunday, the day before the tsunami hit Port Dickson, the first Latcha (Million) Archanai was held. There were about 2000 people in the temple at that time with 13 gurukkals conducting the poojas. The next day, the day the tsunami hit, around 1800 people were in the temple dining hall which was located closer to the sea. Instead of the water level rising as a result of the tsunami, the water was drawn into the sea to prevent any kind of accident. The day before Amavasai/Pournami, the day of Amavasai/Pournami and on the day after Amavasai/Pournami, the waves will roar uncontrollably. On Thiruvilla day, no matter how hot the weather is, it will rain from time to time as well. "
