History

History

The construction of this temple started in 1914. The temple has a magnificent 'Raja Gopuram' (tall monumental entrance) and is flanked by 2 stunning 'Vels. ' (Holy Spear) at the temple entrance. The temple stands on the land of the former Magistrate's Court. Interestingly, the main sanctum of the temple was previously occupied by judges. The devotees of the temple have found peace through the blessings of Lord Subramaniyar. Some time ago, a nurse from Singapore came to this temple. He had cancer, and was considered terminally ill. Miraculously, he recovered, married soon after and now has 2 children. Another devotee, who was in government service was fired from his job for doing something wrong. In anxiety, he prayed fervently in this temple. Due to his obedience, he was reinstated to his current job and also received a promotion. As Lord Subramaniyar is in the form of 'Andi' (surrender), he sometimes gives advice to devotees in this form. The statue of Lord Subramaniyar was originally brought from India, and sent to London. However, the statue found its way to its current site. Therefore the Lord Subramaniyar of this temple is known as London Muruga. Many saints have visited this temple, such as ThiruMuruga Kirubaanantha Vaariyaar, Kavingyar Kannathaasan, Sri Madurai Aathinam and Sri Pitchai Gurukkal. All of them have experienced the divine vibrations of the spiritual fortress of Lord Subramaniyar.

Significance

he temple is a major attraction for locals and tourists because of its Ratham after Thaipusam. Velli Ratham was used during that time to celebrate the Thaipusam festival. The temple also has a kavadi and nearly 300 000 people will come to celebrate the festival. Every festival based on Murugan will be celebrated in this temple. In addition, the beauty and facilities provided by this temple have successfully attracted tourists.
