History

History

The temple has existed since 1930 and the temple is 92 years old. The temple is located at the Belemang Sagil Estate. The purpose of the establishment of this temple is for the residents of this estate to worship. During the establishment of this temple in 1930 , the statue of the Ganesha deity was built large and it is located under a tree that is over 150 years old. From the existence of this temple in 1930 until now this Ganesha deity has never been moved to another place even during construction work. According to the history of the temple, a shaman came to the temple late one night in 1968 to pick up special items at this temple but he was very surprised and saved himself quickly after seeing the many goddesses in control of the temple. Then he had a fever for a week. Moolastanam Sri Sauntraya Amman has a statue structure that is very graceful although small but the face of the Amman goddess is very beautiful and the devotees will be very excited to see the face of the goddess Amman in this temple considered very powerful. During the construction of this temple, the contractor had accidently urinated in the nearby area of the goddess Amma and soon he fell seriously ill and only recovered after apologizing in front of the goddess Amma. The pool within the temple area has its own history as it is the belief of the adherents here that this pool is a bathing place for the goddesses. In 1957, the Estate Manager, Mr.Garner , instructed the staff to dispose waste into the pond. Residents at the estate met Mr. Garner and advised him to withdraw the order with them recounting the origin of the pond to Mr.Garner. But he was stubborn and stuck with his stance. Soon, he fell seriously ill and eventually he died in London after all efforts to heal him failed. This true story served as a lesson to the estate management and until now the pond has not been disturbed by the management. Initially, the structure of this temple started from a small building under a large tree. Later, the temple was rebuilt in 2017 with large statues of deities and goddesses in the temple carved by contractors from India. (2022- this history is shared by Mr Apalanaidu ,Mr Chella)

Significance

The temple has its own charm although it is known as Sri Maha Mariamman Temple,Ladang Belemang,Sagil but it has a large statue of the god Sri Vinagayar and is an attraction for the public including the residents from outside estate. The temple is often the focus during Vinagayar Chathurthi's due to the uniqueness of the Vinagayar deity in this temple as well as its high sacrament. Many people will come to this temple to fulfil their vows after their prayers are answered. Within the temple , there is a very beautiful pool and a beautiful view behind it. In addition, the temple has the God Naggama located on a hill near the pool. People from inside and outside the estate normally visit this temple on the special day for Naggama every month. Another major attraction of the temple is ‘theemeethi’ ceremony which is carried out at night during the annual celebration of the temple (Tiruvizha). This ceremony is the main focus for the community outside and every year about 1000 devotees come to witness this very festive ceremony. During this ceremony, musical accompaniment of Tappu and Urumi enlivens this ceremony further. The temple also has a statue of the Goddess Pechiamman that attracts the surrounding community as other temples around this area has no Goddess Pechiamman. Usually after the birth of the child, parents will come to this temple to perform special prayers to the goddess. In addition, couples who do not have children despite being married for a long period will come to pray to the Goddess Pechiamman and they will come to fulfill the vows if their prayers are granted. In addition, the temple also has Navagaram where there are 9 deities that are usually worshipped on Thursdays and Saturdays and devotees will light the ‘ellu vilaku’ on that special days. The community around the estate especially the young men and women do gotong-royong and work together to carry out the temple celebration especially during the ‘ Tiruvizha’ which is held during the time of Aadi Masam. Every year the volunteers and devotees to the temple grows because of their trust and believe in the gods and goddesses in this temple.
