History
History
This temple was established in 1907 by William Kellies Smith as a sign of gratitude to Dewi Sri Maha Mariamman who had fulfilled his and his wife's prayers by granting them a son. Apart from Amman as the main goddess, there are also navageragam, shivan, murugan, and vinayagar deities in this temple. The general belief in this temple is that those who pray to have offspring will be blessed with children. Not only Hindu believers locally but also abroad such as New Zealand and Bangladesh. A lot of help was given during MCO such as money and kitchen essentials to the residents living nearby. The temple also organises activities such as tuition, kindergarten classes, bharatham classes and yoga class and many more are held in this temple. Help is also given in terms of education (notebook, stationary). The community helps a lot during the festival or thiruvila near the temple.
Significance
This temple was built like Kellies Castle and looks almost the same. The items used for the construction of the temple are not made of cement but natural materials eg.,egg white, soil, honey and cane sugar . This temple was built using human energy completely without the use of machinery. The statue and the temple structure (koburam) are all unique and are like structures in India. A statue of Williams Kellies is also found in the temple and is looked after by the temple committee."
