History

History

In 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Sankaran Letchumi built a small cottage within the land area of their residence for Lord Subramaniar and over time this small temple became increasingly popular. Every Friday, prayer will be held because Friday was considered as the luckiest and most special day. As the Thaipusam festival was celebrated here in 1967, more devotees began to take part in the kavadi parade with a special "Abhishegam" followed by this luxurious 'Annathanam' yearly. One of the temple devotee ,Mrs. Neela Achuthan, played an important role in the growth of the temple. Mrs. Neela always took charge in cleaning around the temple and helped in the preparation of food. Unfortunately, Mrs Neela died in 2003 but she left a legacy. Mr. Velu Achuthan felt the need to build a larger temple to house a growing number of adherents. He started by officially registering the temple on 20 March 1978 (J1119) and formed a committee headed by Mr Ramalingam. Mr. Ramalingam and his committee members, with strong support from the public, began preparations for the inaugural Maha Kumbhabhishegam on 4th December 1994. They also received help from the government through MIC and the late Tan Sri Mohd Rahmat, the Member of Parliament for Pulai. The temple’s foundation laying ceremony was officiated by Tun Samy Velu who was the Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Post and President of MIC at the time. After 12 years, the 2nd Maha Kumbhabhishegam was successfully conducted on 24th February 2008 led by Mr K. Prabhakaran with the strong support of his committee members. From 1994 until now, the temple has never failed in organising prayer ceremonies and Hindu religious festivals. Currently, this temple is headed by Mr. K. Arumugan and the temple continues to grow rapidly in terms of providing service and better facilities for the devotees here. The latest is the purchase of a piece of land next to the temple to provide more space and comfort for the devotees. Furthermore, the temple also never forgets it’s social and charitable responsibilities. The temple premises is often used to conduct religious classes and other educational activities that bring good to the Hindu community here. On 31st January 2018, His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim, Sultan of Johor visited the temple in conjunction with Thaipusam celebration. This event will remain forever memorable in the hearts of the 10,000 devotees at Sri Subramaniar Temple, Tampoi.

Significance

The uniqueness of this temple is that the devotees belief that all prayers will be answered in a short time.
